New Drug Hits Southern Illinois

JOHNSON CO., IL-- A man from Africa faces charges of drug trafficking in Johnson County for an illegal substance some police have not heard of.

Mohamed Diirshe is charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession with the intent to deliver, and trafficking.

According to court documents, Diirshe was caught with 68 bundles of a drug called Khat. Users chew the plant to get high.

Sheriff Elry Faulkner says the drug has not been found in Johnson County before. He credits state police with identifying the substance.

"If I would have made the stop myself and I've been doing this for years. I would have probably thought it was a garden plant or something and would have just let it go," said Faulkner.

Diirshe is a native of Somalia where the drug is legal. He posted $7,500 bond, and is due back in court December 27th.
