CAT Tracks for March 19, 2007

"Round Two" found a divided Cairo Board of Education making more administrative changes.

The meeting was called to order by Vice President Arnold Burris at 6 p.m. Present were Burris, Mallory, Stubblefield, and Gooden. (Brown arrived at 6:04 p.m. and Posey arrived at 6:08 p.m.)

Superintendent Whitledge opened the meeting by providing answers to some of the financial questions that were raised in the March 15th meeting.

The BOE voted to enter closed session at 6:09 p.m. The BOE voted to exit closed session at 8:04 p.m.

Superintendent Whitledge then read a resolution concerning the position of "Coordinator of Student Services". The gist of the resolution was:

  • That position is being eliminated in favor of a position of "Guidance Counselor".
  • Since the current holder of the position (Constance Williams) does not have the required certificate to be a guidance counselor, she is hereby honorably dismissed from the position as of June 30, 2007.
  • Constance Williams is hereby reassigned as a classroom teacher for the 2007-08 School Year at her proper salary placement on the certified teacher salary schedule.
A motion was made and seconded to approve the resolution. The vote on the motion was: 3 Ayes, 2 Nays, and 1 Abstain.

Superintendent Whitledge next read a listing of administrative assignments for the 2007-08 School Year that included:

  • CJSHS Principal - Tony Maltbia
  • Federal and State Grants - Allene Houston
  • Elementary Principal (Emerson and Bennett) - Rose Gayle Pickett
A motion was made and seconded to approve the administrative assignments. The vote on the motion was: 3 Ayes, 2 Nays, and 1 Abstain.

Vice President Burris directed Superintendent Whitledge to notify the Regional Office of Education to begin a superintendent search.

A motion was made, seconded, and passed to adjourn at 8:10.

POSTSCRIPT: It was reported in the previous "minutes" of the March 15th BOE meeting that Superintendent Whitledge had indicated that the "Reduction in Force" notice on the agenda did NOT concern CAT bargaining positions. This morning, Superintendent Whitledge notified me that there had been a change...that first-year teachers would "reluctantly" be RIFed at tonight's meeting. However, as you will notice above, no action was taken tonight on that measure. Unfortunately, such action CAN be taken up to 45 calendar days from the last day of school. So, no news IS good news, but stay tuned...
