Columbine High School Had Armed Guards During Massacre In 1999
CAT Tracks Editor's Note:
Sadly...
...bottom line...
...there is no solution.
Oh, we can continue to talk about it, and we will in the wake of the next massacre...
...we can tweak safety rules and regulations...
...but at the end of the day, if an angry, unbalanced person wants to kill a bunch of people, there ain't a damn thing anyone can do to stop them.
Yes, I suppose that's a pessimistic outlook, but...
...just keepin' it real!
Me?
Metal detectors and trained armed guards at the entrance(s) of the school, I'm good with that...
...intensive background checks for gun-buyers, fine (although with an estimated 300 million guns already in circulation, it's the old closing the barn door after the horse has escaped thing. But, gotta start somewhere, sometime. If we implement tougher restrictions today, why we might make some progress by the next century - i.e. there is no quick fix!)
I am not a member of the National Rifle Association and cringe at its absurd defense of mass shootings, but the NRA is right about one thing...
The 2nd Amendment to the United States Constitution protects the right of citizens to "bear arms". Unless that "right" is removed by a vote of two-thirds of Congress and ratified by three-fourths of the states (good luck with that!), guns will remain available to those who wish to exact revenge for perceived grievances.
It's a much maligned position of the NRA that "Guns don't kill people, people do" (or words to that effect.)
Well, ya know...
...they are sadly right.
Remember the headlines where somebody ran their car into a group of pedestrians?
Where there is a will, there is a way...

Okay, that was my two cents...
Below is what Washington Post Columnist Eugene Robinson thinks about the NRA's proposal for armed police officers in every school:
