SHORT-STREETED

If you have ever lived in a dorm...

...you have most likely heard of, if not experienced, the short-sheeted experience.

This prank is fun for the perpetrator(s), not so much for the "victim".

This oldie-but-goodie came to mind whilst wandering the streets of Cairo this week...

...down on main street, well, what used to be "main street", aka Eighth Street.

Past and present demolition has reduced a once proud street to a mere shadow of itself, as the pictures below clearly show:

Looking east...

Looking west...

What is left of the north side...

What is left of the south side...

Again looking west, from a broader perspective...

The grassy area in the forefront...

...what remains of Smith & Groves.

Even more specifically, the column at the apex of the grassy space...

...a monument, if you will.

Alas, Cairoites, being "short-streeted" is not funny.

Sad times, indeed...

And, in a blast from the past, looking east down Eighth Street from Washington Avenue in 1971...
