SPECIAL BOE MEETING...MINUTES

The Cairo Board of Education held a Special Meeting on Monday, July 2, 2012, at 6:00 p.m.

Below are the "minutes"...

I. Call To Order - 6 p.m.

II. Roll Call - Coleman, Harris, Burris, Gooden, McBride. (Nelson arrived at 6:01 p.m.; Moore arrived at 6:40 p.m.)

III. Recognition and Comments from Employees and Public - None.

IV. Approval of Agenda - Special Meeting - Motion made, seconded, and passed.

V. Open Session:

    A. Employment Regarding Extra Curricular Positions - Superintendent Andrea Evers indicated that a discussion of her recommendations for the positions would be conducted in closed session.

    B. Approve Donation of Bennett Elementary School and Cairo Community Education Center Buildings to HOPE INTERNATIONAL - Superintendent Evers indicated that she had been in discussion with representatives of HOPE INTERNATIONAL. It is an organization that does community outreach, using buildings to aid victims of natural disasters (like fire and flood) and also makes classes available. This topic will be revisited at the BOE's regular July 19th meeting.

VI. Closed Session - The BOE voted to enter closed session at 6:04 p.m. The BOE voted to exit closed session at 6:55 p.m.

VII. Requiring Action/Decisions By Board of Education:

(CAT Tracks Editor's Note: I used my only copy of the agenda to take notes and messed it up for scanning the athletic positions listed on the agenda. Ain't no way that I'm gonna type the seventeen positions. Instead, if you scroll down below the agenda, you will find the alphabetical listing of hires that corresponds with the positions. In short, you will find "a. Ronnie Woods"...to indicate that a motion was made, seconded, and passed to hire Ronnie Woods as Athletic Director.)

Athletic Hires:

    a. Ronnie Woods
    b. Lorenzo Duncan
    c. No Action
    d. Kelly Shepherd
    e. Brian Brantner
    f. Regina Brown
    g. Keisha Carr
    h. Diane Thomas
    i. Allen Pearman
    j. Allen Pearman
    k. No Action
    l. Regina Brown
    m. Charlotte Lovelace
    n. No Action
    o. No Action
    p. No Action
    q. No Action

There were a couple of other athletic hires not listed on the agenda:

    1. Assistant Athletic Director - Allen Pearman (CAT Tracks Editor's Note: The District has never had one of those. It wasn't advertised, so I don't know from whence it came. UPDATE: I have been informed that the "Assistant AD" position is due to the extensive commitments of new AD Ronnie Woods...more like co-ADs.)

    2. High School Volleyball - Charlotte Lovelace. (CAT Tracks Editor's Note: This position had been advertised but was inadvertently left off of the BOE agenda.)

    3. Assistant Baseball Coach - Brian Brantner (CAT Tracks Editor's Note: Didn't catch whether this was high school, junior high school, or both.)

Superintendent Evers stated that the other positions would "carry over" (pending discussions between the Athletic Director and the coaches involved.)

The BOE then voted to re-enter closed session at 7:04 p.m for a "Work Session". Sometime after 9:15 p.m. (during a special needs break), patient CATs were informed that no action would be forthcoming following the work session...that a vote to adjourn would be the only order of business. Not being entirely dumb CATs, we exited the warm and stuffy CCEC lobby...into the hot and muggy night. Gives one a greater appreciation of the humble but cool cat cave!
