MORE BROKEN PROMISES |
Not satisfied with eliminating tenure for active teachers and reneging on pensions for retirees...
...it's time to rewrite or ignore constitutional mandates for a "suitable" funding level to educate children.
Somehow, I don't think that Dorothy and Toto would recognize this Kansas...
From the New York Times
What’s the Matter With Kansas’ Schools?
CAT Tracks Editor's Note:
Somewhere over the rainbow, hell!
In the 21st Century version, Dorothy's bubble bursts for real when...
...instead of Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, 'twas Governor Sam Brownback of the Sunflower State who appeared.
The fright factor increased ten-fold, make that a thousand-fold, when...
...the Wicked Witch of the East (aka Arne Duncan) was spared the falling house treatment, to be joined by the Wicked Witch of the West (aka Michelle Rhee.)
Since there are no happy endings in public education these days, the movie concludes with Toto pulling the curtain aside to reveal Arne and Michelle having a spirited tug-of-war over the ruby slippers:
"Race to the top...NO!...Students First...NO!...Race to the Top...NO!...Students First...NO!..."
In a voice-over, as the screen fades to black, Governor Brownback yells "Cut!"
With leaders of both parties trying to outdo each other in slashing funding and attacking public education...
...dark days indeed!
