Report: ELA teachers not implementing Common Core
CAT Tracks Editor's Note:
When I got to #4 on their list of the "main reasons, based on meticulous research, that national reading scores have not seen significant change":
- I felt a surge of elation in my dinosaur bones: Pedagogy has suffered as teachers were "admonished to function as 'guides on the side' rather than 'sages on the stage'". Whoa, I know that nobody likes an "I told you so", but dammit: "I did, I did, I did tell you so!" (Guess this old "putty tat" did learn something from that damn Tweety Bird.)
- But, then, they burst my bubble with: "and texts were often scrutinized for possible bias. “This had the effect of making many of the [texts] boring and dull, hence not really worth reading—and certainly not worth reading deeply." I mean, what in the hell does text selection have to do with the "guide vs sage" pedagogy? In my humble opinion (not that I claim to be an ELA teacher), that last part either belonged with #3 or should have been Reason #5.
Oh, well...
In a survey of my peers, a third pedagogy easily trumped both "guide or sage":
RETIRED!
