ARE YOU TOUGH ENOUGH?

Washington Post columnist Jay Mathews reprises a recent essay appearing in Education Week, "Boredom’s Paradox," by Mark Bauerlein...

From the Washington Post

Making high school more exciting won’t help potential dropouts, educator says

Jay admits that the essay "made much of what I have read about how to improve high schools seem inane and counterproductive."

WOW!

Is Jay opening his eyes?

Sadly, the first sentence of Jay's final paragraph gives me little hope.

He offers a lame "solution":

Really!

Good luck with that "silver bullet".

And in conclusion...

With his final sentence, Jay (predictably) drops the dropout problem in the lap of teachers...

...questioning how many teachers are "tough enough" to implement his "silver bullet".

A false choice!

Memo to Jay:

As always, teachers will continue to seek ways to reach disengaged students...

...succeeding with some, failing with others.

Sadly, there have always been, there shall always be dropouts.

That's reality...
