REGULAR BOE MEETING

The Cairo Board of Education held its Rescheduled Regular Meeting on Monday, November 18th, at 6 p.m.

Some highlights:

All BOE members were present (with Coleman arriving at 6:09 p.m.)

Under "Examples of Excellence":

No visitors or employees asked to be recognized to address the BOE. (Superintendent Andrea Evers did ask the 21st Century representative if the organization had yet received word on their funding, the response being "No...that it was still under review.")

There was a minor "dust up" over the "Approval of the Consent Agenda", as whether to approve all of Item #4 with one motion...or to split it up. The end result being:

  • Vote on Items (1) and (2)...which was eventually done and approved.

  • Remove (3) and discuss the matter in closed session.

  • Vote on Items (4) through (7)...which was eventually done and approved.

  • Separate Item (8) for discussion. There were two questions...one over the $2,500 billing by the District's attorney (for various union negotiations), and another concerning a billing for "concessions". Item (8) was eventually approved without change.

Under the heading of "Report of Superintendent":

  • Medal/Award ceremonies for students who "met or exceeded" on last year's ISAT and PSEA.

  • Positive results from the District's efforts to improve attendance, which is up for both students and teachers.

  • Junior High and Senior High Beta Club inductions.

  • Some students playing chess at lunch.

  • Further indication that General State Aid funding will be at 85%, down from 89%, although no vote has yet been taken.

  • The District's annual financial report has been completed and filed. It will be published in The Cairo Citizen this week.

  • Efforts to increase parental involvement.

  • Teachers are to come up with three or four strategies to improve student achievement, to reach students who were failing for the First Quarter.

The BOE voted to enter Closed Session at 6:40 p.m. The BOE voted to exit Closed Session at 8:20 p.m.

Item #9 - "Requiring Action/Decisions By Board of Education":

  • Resignations accepted.

  • "Double" raises for Teacher Assistants and Custodians approved. (2.5% for each year.)

  • No vote needed on Item (8)...date simply set for December 9th at 6 p.m.

  • Salary increases for the two building principals...tabled until the June BOE meeting.

  • Item (11) on the minimum eligibility standards for BOE members was approved...at 75%. (Don't ask me what this is about. There was no discussion.)

  • A motion was made, seconded and passed to approve the "Estimated Tax Levy". (See documents below.)

There was no other business.

The meeting adjourned at 8:27 p.m.

"Missing" Treasurer's Reports from three previous months were also made available for approval:
