CURSIVE, FOILED AGAIN? |
A new Generation "X"...
...whose proud ("there's no fun in that") members won't even be able to write their own name!
Will give new meaning to "making their mark" in society...
From WSIL TV Channel 3
Cursive in the Classroom Up For Debate
You think schools have a bad reputation now...
...just wait until the "old folks" at home start getting peppered with phone calls:
Thanks for the school money!
BTW, since I can't read that weird old writing you use, can you tell me what you said?
FOOTNOTE:
There should be no "debate" on learning how to read and write cursive.
Using it in "daily work" (as with everything else) should be up to individual teachers.
Even this old dinosaur didn't care what high school students used in completing assignments...
...probably because I was a "printer"...
...mostly because I discovered early in my teaching career that I couldn't do "cursive" on the chalkboard (not that any self-respecting teacher would use a chalkboard anymore!)
In fact, I remember several students whose "cursive" made me curse!
I would spent an inordinate amount of time trying to decipher their words (suspicioning all the while that the student in question had developed their "style" over the years to discourage close reading by the teacher with the subsequent "awarding" of credit that was not really deserved.)
Anyway...
After a couple eye-blurring sessions, I would finally give it up (probably thinking "there's no fun in that!")
I would compliment the student on the "beauty" of their handwriting, offering my opinion that their paper should rightly be framed and hung on the wall for artistic perusal.
I would then inform them that I would not be grading any future papers unless they "toned down" their cursive, or printed.
Grandma, I got your letter.
