ARE KIDS TOO CODDLED? |
From the New York Times
Although not a fan of Common Core (because of its misuse in grading teachers and schools)...
...I found myself agreeing with most of the article.
Although a "bleeding-heart liberal"...
...I am a former teacher who saw firsthand the devastating effects that the emphasis on "self esteem" had on students. Too many students "thought" they were smart...too smart to be bothered with a teacher's attempt to challenge their intellect. Such efforts by a "demanding teacher" were considered an "insult to their intelligence", an "intelligence" that had been recognized and praised by previous teachers and parents. The student would shut down and accuse the teacher: "You're being mean to me!"
In today's test-crazy education world...
...the teacher then gets fired when the student's test scores don't rise.
The student?
Since there are no consequences for the student, s/he remains blissfully ignorant...
...until such time that "self esteem" meets the real world.
And, even then:
It's a cold, cruel, sorry world...
...that doesn't see what it's missing in me!
"It's not my fault!"
