REGULAR BOE MEETING...AGENDA PLUS |
The Cairo Board of Education held its regular meeting on July 18th at 6 p.m.
Below is the agenda...
...followed by abbreviated notes:
All present.
There was a problem with the minutes of June 20th, so they were not approved. The others were.
Superintendent's Report:
- A discussion about the recent "Civil War Debate" between a Cairo team and a Chicago team. The Cairo team was mostly junior high age, the Chicago team mostly high school students. There will be a debate between Cairo teams this coming Saturday at the Cairo public library...from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. (See the back page of this week's The Cairo Citizen.) There are supposed to be some adults involved with the Chicago team to moderate the debate. Superintendent Evers described the experience by the students and sponsors as "a remarkable journey".
- The District received a $50,000 matching maintenance grant. It is being used to prepare two classrooms at CJSHS for the arrival of the 6th Grade during the upcoming school year.
- Also...some of the maintenance grant is also being used to upgrade security at the entrance of Cairo Elementary...the installation of two sets of doors...one at the entrance to the first floor hallway, the second at the top of the stairs to the second floor hallway. This sparked a prolonged discussion about the person who would "man" the foyer...the fact that they would be unprotected. The discussion then drifted to CJSHS, that there were places that were not covered by cameras, and that a student or adult on the inside could always open one of the non-front entrance doors and admit intruders. The discussion finally fizzled out with any resolutions at either building.
Closed session was from 6:34 p.m. to 7:44 p.m.
Agenda Item #9. Requiring Action/Decisions By Board of Education:
- 1. "a and C" were approved.."b" was tabled to allow CE Principal Pickett to check references.
- 2.-6. - Approved. Sheila Nelson was approved as the JAMP Governing Board Member. The salary increase for non-union/non-certified personnel was 2.5%. (CAT Tracks Editor's Note: You union people are just out of luck for yet another year. Talk about punishment...union animus!)
There will be a special meeting (actually two special meetings) next Thursday, July 25th, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The first meeting will be to hire the third-grade teacher (tabled this evening.)
The second meeting will the an ISAB training session.
