SOOTHE MY PALPITATING HEART |
So sayeth a multitude of English/Language Arts teachers across the land!
From the Huffington Post...
Professor Sugata Mitra On Teaching Spelling And Grammar: Phones Have Made It Unnecessary
Memo to math teachers...
...wipe those smirks off of your faces.
Using Professor Sugata Mitra's rationale...
...calculators ended any need of teaching your treasured curriculum back in my day...when dinosaurs roamed and ruled.
And, now, calculator apps for smartphones and tablets!
Do the math...
...you're toast!
And the rest of y'all...
Armed with Google, anybody can find out about anything, anytime and anywhere they want.
In fact, I'd say the time has come to eliminate most academic subjects...
...except for the few students who intend to pursue "hands on" careers. I mean, we don't want to issue a smartphone to just anybody and turn them loose building bridges and such.
Yep...
...schools should concentrate on stuff you can't just look up...like cooking, wood/metal-working and such...the favored "hands on" activities!
Oh, and don't forget PE! The "subject" always looked down upon by the academic types in the teaching profession...snidely commenting: "Who can't throw out a basketball?"
With the expanding obesity problem in the United States, physical education may finally receive the recognition it deserves...a matter of life and death. The time has come to get those potatoes off of the couches!
Think about it...
Those who excel at PE will be able to literally run circles around their snobbish, bookish counterparts!
Defenders of the CCSS have emphasized that they are all about "standards", that there is no Common Core "Curriculum".
Well, I think there should be and I am prepared to fill that void!
Let me be the first to propose the new short and sweet CC curriculum:
BYOD to PE
What about standardized testing, you ask?
How many millions and billions of dollars will required to develop standardized tests for this proposed CC standards/curriculum?
Not to worry...
...that's the beauty of my proposal!
It will cost nothing to implement. In fact, it's a no paper or pencils environment, reflecting the new emphasis on PE in the curriculum!
Testing will be accomplished by observation in the gym or on the playground...totally transparent, eliminates any possibility of cheating.
To smooth the transition for dinosaurs, I've even given it a familiar ring:
"Can you walk and Google at the same time?"
