The Cairo Board of Education held its Regular Meeting on Thursday, January 13th at 6 p.m.

There was an AMENDED agenda available for attendees...

...it is below, followed by the "minutes":

"Minutes":

1. All members were present.

2. CJSHS Principal Zena Madison introduced Middle School Teacher Keith Campbell who gave a handout about an upcoming science fair to the BOE members. (Click to see handout.) He explained the process that would be followed which would culminate in a Science Fair on February 24-26. Since this is the first year for such an event in a long time, Mr. Campbell indicated that the students would make their oral presentations directly to him. However, there will be a group of teachers (and possibly community members) who will actually judge the student projects, which will then be on display to the public. Mr. Campbell also indicated that student science teams had been selected to participate in robotic competitions in Western Kentucky and Carbondale, IL.

3. No visitors asked to be recognized.

4. Consent agenda approved without discussion or comment.

5-6. I didn't keep up with all of the Superintendent's report/informational. There's going to be a gang awareness presentation to/for parents by a member of the Illinois State Police. Two tax levies have been received by the District and deposited (in their ever-growing account at the First National Bank.) Several members of the District are going to the Apple Connect Kick-Off Event to be held in Texas. (This is related to the grant that was received by the District that will provide iPads to all Cairo students.) Finally, Superintendent Andrea Evers announced that should Cairo and Meridian meet in the Junior High Boys Basketball Regional, the game will be closed to the public. Not even the cheerleaders will be allowed to attend. After some negotiations by the Superintendent, two adults per player will be allowed to attend. (Games not involving a direct match-up between Cairo and Meridian will be open to the public. This same policy would have been followed if the two schools had met in the Junior High Girls Basketball Regional, but it didn't happen and Cairo has been eliminated.)

7. Nothing listed.

8. The BOE voted to enter Closed Session at 6:21 p.m. The BOE voted to exit Closed Session at 9:21 p.m.
