Math Experiment: How Murphysboro H.S. Could Be Model for Entire State

CAT Tracks Editor's Note:

Ya know, it was a late night...

...four hours of a school board meeting (including the ice-scraping to and fro! Retired teachers don't do ice-scrapping on our usual "Saturday"...we just stay inside and wait for it to melt! :-)

Then, two hours of typing and scanning "minutes".

So, I'm going to resist any catty commentary on today's article...

...other than to note that (other than the name of the standards) this is nothing "new". Individual teachers (even in good ol' CHS) did all this stuff back in the day...and some didn't. (I shall withhold names to protect me! :-)

Actually, there were a couple of times when students were pushing other students around in my rolling teacher's chair...before I walked in from hallway supervision and made them stop.

Hell, there were even times when collaboration and "student teaching" broke out in my classroom. That was a good thing and I allowed it to continue, even praising the participants.

But...

The success of any of these "experiments" will depend on the teacher and the clientele.

Trust me on this...

...the "math experiment" being conducted in Murphysboro is not the elusive silver bullet...

...because, there is no silver bullet!

Teaching is an art, not science.

Teaching is messy...

...and not for the faint of heart!
