SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS |
David Brooks, my favorite conservative columnist, responds to President Obama's call for free tuition for all at community colleges...
From the New York Times
CAT Tracks Editor's Note:
Now...
...if David would finally realize (admit?) that poverty is the reason for the achievement gap - not "the soft bigotry of low expectations" or "bad teachers".
I mean...
David summarizes his alternative plan thusly:
Well, David, the same holds true for all those birth to 18-year-old children and the daily conditions that they face before they ever go off to community college and "dream the American dream".
Maybe it's time for you to deliver a wake-up call to your conservative brethren...
...that labeling teachers as "bad" and public schools as "failing" is not the solution to the problems facing education in the United States...
...it is only exacerbating the problem, throwing gasoline onto the fire.
Teachers didn't start the fire...
...they are the ones who are valiantly fighting it, shoveling sand onto the flames...
...as they try to uncover the heads of your fellow ostriches!
In short, you wouldn’t write government checks for tuition. You’d strengthen structures around the schools. You’d focus on the lived environment of actual students and create relationships and cushions to help them thrive.
