The U.S. 51 Ohio River 'Cairo' Bridge is still closed...

U.S. 51 Ohio River "Cairo" Bridge closure continues

CAT Tracks Editor's Note:

Route 3 from Cairo to Cape Girardeau was still open Monday morning.

From the Miller City road to the 4-way stop, the water is still a couple of feet below pavement level.

However, when you get to the the southern portion of Olive Branch, the water is lapping at the shoulders of the highway...

...and those shoulders are dotted with local and emergency vehicles, so travel through the area is ill-advised.

After seeing the status first hand, I chose to return by the Grapevine Trail.

Interstate 57 and Routes 37, 51, 127 north of Cairo are all open with no travel restrictions.

If you have traveled into and out of Cairo during the past week, you probably noticed water still in the northbound lane of Sycamore at the old Creative Insurance Agency building. That water is not left over from last week's rain, it is from the sand boil that has reappeared. Officials are aware of it and keeping an eye on it. So far, they have not deemed it necessary to sandbag like they did during the Flood of 2011.
