The Cairo Board of Education held its regular meeting on Thursday, February 18th, at 6 p.m.

When the meeting was called to order, a bare quorum was present: Coleman, Harris, Nelson, and McBride. (Stubblefield arrived at 6:04; Burris arrived at 6:11)
The room was packed with standing room only...
...mostly teachers and students ready to demonstrate "Examples of Excellence":
- First was CE 2nd Grade Teacher Angela Coleman. She proudly announced that in the latest MAP testing, all 2nd Grade students showed progress in math and only one student failed to show progress in reading. Next, two of her 2nd grade students showed off their skills in using the District's newly acquired iPads.
- The next teacher was 3rd Grade Teacher Melissa Hawkins. Several of her students demonstrated their use of iPads to work various mathematics operations.
- CHS Math Teacher Kaylee Justice had several of her students demonstrate their use of iPads to construct holograms and movies.
- CJSHS Teacher/Sponsor Ryan O'Shea brought two groups of students.
- Ryan introduced Queenqweariona Brown as the newly elected Secretary of the Illinois Junior Beta Club! (She was elected just this week at the annual convention.) At the convention, the Junior Betas won 3rd place with the campaign skit. (The current President of the Cairo Junior High Beta Club is Rajanae Moore.)
- Ryan next announced that the Cairo WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering) Team finish 3rd in the regionals held at SCC (which was reported in the Cairo Citizen and previously posted on CAT Tracks.)
Specifically:
- Olivia Mayberry took 3rd place in Engineering Graphics.
- Andres Teruel placed 3rd in Physics
- Jalaya Whitfield and Ukari Posey placed 2nd in Computer Science. As a result, they advance to the sectional to be held in Carbondale on March 16th.

Report of the Superintendent - Andrea Evers made a variety of announcements, which again I was unable to follow. Superintendent Evers offered her congratulations of the Junior High Boys Basketball team for taking the Class S State Championship...especially remarking on their good behavior. This contrasted with the projection of another possible Cairo-Meridian regional final on Friday, February 26th. Accordingly, local law enforcement has been contacted.
Superintendent Evers concluded her remarks by giving a brief synopsis of the remaining items on the agenda, indicating that maybe there would be no need to go into closed session. Well, those hopes were quickly dashed when BOE Member Gabriel Harris indicated that he had something he wanted to discuss.
The BOE voted to enter Closed Session at 6:46 p.m.
The BOE voted to exit Closed Session at 7:13 p.m (BOE Member Mary Coleman departed sometime during closed session.)
The BOE then voted to approve the four items under "9". (The Junior High Girls Track Coach is Keoshia Woods.)
The BOE voted to adjourn at 7:15 p.m.
