MEET THE NEW BOSS... |
...same as the old boss.
Republican Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, chairman of the Senate education committee, accuses new U.S. Secretary of Education John King of trying to subvert the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the new K-12 U.S. education law.
Since the article is long (and, according to today's CJSHS marquee, you are in the "28 school days remaining" rush), let me give you a couple of quotes that summarize how unhappy Senator Alexander is with "The King":
And then it got ugly:
I don’t know whether that means the 22 senators on the committee, or all of the staff sitting behind us.
I am not sure how smart we are, but we’re smart enough to write a law in plain English, and we’re also smart enough to anticipate that your lawyers would attempt to ignore what we wrote and try to move around it."
Okay, enough with "the tease", the full article follows:

Didn’t take long: New education secretary starts butting heads in nation’s capital
CAT Tracks Editor's Note:
Can't say I have any sympathy for Senator Alexander et al...
...since individuals and organizations were screaming from the cheap seats that John King was just another HWSRN, if not worse. Yet King's Senate confirmation hearing was purely ceremonial, Republicans and Democrats taking turns tossing him "softball questions", ignoring all the controversy that hounded him out of New York.
So, senators...
...you wanted him, you've got him!
Don't say you weren't warned...
"Mr. Secretary, not only is what you’re doing against the law, the way you’re trying to do it is against another provision in the law."
"Now according to a Politico story published on December 18, the former Secretary of Education said: 'Candidly, our lawyers are much smarter than many of the folks who were working on this bill.'
