In my experience as a union official and a union-management observer, trying to play nice with the "powers that be" is taken as a sign of weakness by those powers, who have no intention of being nice in return.

Randi's AFT (and the NEA) should have learned this lesson from their dealings with Barack Obama and Arne Duncan.

The IEA should have learned this lesson when they sold out their members by destroying tenure as we knew it.

The only thing that the "powers that be" understand, grudgingly respect, is strength.
