ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS IN CAIRO

Nothing really new in this story, but...

From WSIL TV Channel 3

Army Corps of Engineers fights against rising Cairo flood waters

CAT Tracks Editor's Note:

As far as flood related activity inside the city...

...Commercial Avenue was blocked off at 9th Street yesterday:

Although the picture is not very clear (due to the position of the sun)...

...there is a pump (to the right of the tractor) accessing the sewer system and pumping the water from that point over the Ohio River levee wall into the river:

In the distance in the picture above there is a second orange hose for the same purpose. (That hose did not necessitate the closing of Commercial Avenue since its source was the 10th Street pumping station east of Commercial.)

I drove the rest of Commercial down to the Bunge complex and there was no sign of other pumping action. (I did not check out the Mississippi River levee.)

One final picture for those of you who have missed it is the closed flood gate at 8th and Ohio Street:

The scene is the same at the 4th Street Ohio River levee gap.

For you out-of-towners...

...not to worry, it's a precautionary tale (I hope). The rivers have (supposedly) crested (for now.)

In Cairo, we have our new crisis (the HUD eviction of public housing residents at Elmwood and McBride) to worry over rather than the annual rite of flooding.

If the situation (flooding or public housing) changes, I shall post updates.

Stay tuned...
