CAT Tracks for July 20, 2017
REGULAR BOE MEETING...AGENDA PLUS |
The Cairo Board of Education held its Regular Meeting on Thursday, July 20, 2017, at 6 p.m.
The amended agenda is below...
...along with the unofficial "minutes" and a copy of this month's "Board Biz":

"Minutes":
1. A bare quorum (Harris, Stubblefield, Gooden, and Nelson) were present. (Moore arrived at 6:15 p.m.)
2. For "Examples of Excellence", CHS Beta Club Sponsor Ryan O'Shea showed off the hardware won at this year's national convention and commented on other members' accomplishments.
3. No one asked to address the BOE.
4. Consent agenda was approved without question or discussion.
5. Click here to read "Board Biz".
6. The BOE voted to enter Closed Session at 6:05 p.m. The BOE voted to exit Closed Session at 7:42 p.m.
7. The BOE voted to approve Items #1-7 under "Requiring Action/Decisions By Board of Education...
...with the notable exception of Item #6, the "Reduction in force of Teaching Assistants". Superintendent Andrea Evers told the audience that Item #6 was being dropped. (CAT Tracks Editor's Note: THAT is a good thing. The time for RIFs is in the Spring, allowing employees to explore alternative employment. Three weeks before the opening of school, not fair to employees. So, a tip of the CAT hat to the Cairo Board of Education.)
8. Nothing.
9. The BOE voted to adjourn at 7:47 p.m.

For the record, there were two special meetings in June...
...on June 19th and June 26th.
CAT Tracks Editor's Note:
Oh.My.God!!!
CSD #1 is encouraging its student body to get risqué...
...allowing them to choose "Any Shade of Gray" top to their uniform...
...of which there are known to be fifty!
Surely, you've heard about THAT movie?
It's rated "R" and certainly has no business being used as a guide as to how our innocent children should dress or act.
I mean, really, do you want to enter the hallowed halls of CJSHS...
...or Cairo ELEMENTARY and see such shenanigans:
I know, I know, I'm a dinosaur and have been out of the school business for almost a decade...
...but have we really sunk so low, become do decadent, that we approve of such behavior?
Now I can understand why U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is advocating the spread of religious schools.
Have we no shame?
Somebody out there, PLEASE, tell me it isn't so!
Okay, loyal CAT Track readers were quick to pounce.
One shouted: "GRAY, Ron, not Grey!"...
...prompting me to respond: "You say tomato, I say tomahto."
Then, another clawed back with: "Christian Grey, Ron."
Well, that just made it worse, reaffirming my previous objection about Betsy DeVos pushing religious schools.
I mean...
I taught the U.S. Constitution for over 30 years in the PUBLIC schools, instructing my students on the founding fathers establishing a wall of separation between church and state.
So, in my humble opinion, not only would encouraging students to wear fifty shades of gray, grey, whatever...
...then maybe there's a hidden agenda here, a step down the slippery slope toward tearing down the original big, beautiful WALL!
Suffice it to say, I was not moved....
...no, I was further enraged!
Finally, however, there was my come-to-Jesus moment...
...a reader sent me a link the the aforementioned movie, a synopsis explaining that the "Grey" in the title referred to the lead character, a man named "Christian Grey", who was something of a "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" person, with a few extras thrown in for good measure.
Well, after such incontrovertible proof, I mean it was on the Internet...
...there was only one response:
