SET FOR DEMOLITION...SAMPLES |
I took a bunch of pictures, but so as not to be overpoweringly depressing and repetitive, below is a sampling...
First up, because of its size and location downtown...near our demolition sponsors, the Cairo Public Utility (which can be seen in the background):
Most of the properties are accompanied by impressive vegetative growths:
The next property takes it to the extreme, requiring the painting of the number on a sign and leaning it against the fence out front. (Yes, I checked it out...there is a house in there!)
In the next picture, somebody evidently wanted to know what lies beneath...stripping away the vegetation, laying bare the structure beneath, uh, for better or worse...
Next are a couple of large houses on the main drag...
My final selection...
...a sentimental favorite.
The location was featured during one of my earlier postings...the "Cairo Mounds".
I don't remember which number mound was located here (I wanna say #5, but am a lazy cat.) I took several shots from various angles, one featuring the discarded telephone pole, one of piles of dirt, one of a pile of an unknown substance. But what really captured my catty attention was the angle shown below.
If you don't recognize the content of the pile...it's sand bags from last year's flooding. The City of Cairo for whatever reason decided to comandier the paved area behind Fat Boy's Bar and Grill as a dumping site.
Me, I felt it a nice touch...
With the disappearing "Cairo Mounds", the City decided to go with a Middle-Eastern motif...sand dunes!
Of course...
There are people out there who are not as positive in their outlook as I...those who might disregard the visions of sand dunes dancing in my head and instead put a negative spin on the sand theme.
Those naysayers would probably see the sand scattered upon the pavement as an apt analogy for the history of Cairo, the decline of a once promising city located at the Confluence of America:
"Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives."
