Why do parents do this?

Is it to prove to others that your child has the prescribed 10 fingers, 10 toes, two arms, two legs, one head...and no serpent's tail?

Oh, well...

I guess the picture at least proves my liberal Democratic bonafides...that I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth.
