8th STREET...A COUPLE OF HINTS |
A follow-up to yesterday's short-streeted posting about Cairo's incredibly shrinking 8th Street.
Got me to thinking...
If you have never been to Cairo...
What, pray tell, prompted this virtual visit? If you are looking to buy a house, drop me a line! For the right price...
If you are a former Cairoite and have been away for many a year, or you're old like me and suffer from CRS...
...maybe you could use a hint as to what actually has disappeared.
So...
Below are a couple of pics I snared off of the Internet that give a view from both directions:
(Disclaimer: A few buildings were removed before these pictures were taken. If anybody has older pictures, scan them and drop me an e-mail!)
First, looking east...
BTW:
Did you look beyond...
...the clock in the center of the intersection, which jumped out in front of a drunken driver one night? This predictable incident prompted the powers that be to relocate the clock to an 'island' at Center Street.
Oh, just in case you were wondering...
...nope, the clock still doesn't work!
Also, further in the distance and to the right, Smith & Groves and the Levee Restaurant.
Sigh...
Looking west...
From a close inspection of both pictures, you can see that five buildings got taken out on the right and two on the left. (What you cannot see is that another building bit the dust. An empty lot now separates the Chamber of Commerce building and the GEM theater. And, if you want to get picky, another building - not pictured - on the near side of the Elks building bit the dust during the current phase of demolition. It was one of the victims of this past year's arsonists.)
Well, that's it!
Pop quiz:
Can you name the eight (ten?) buildings in the pictures that have fallen prey to the wrecking ball?
