POINT-COUNTERPOINT |
Eddie the Eagle warns children...
...when they encounter firearms.
Well, there is certainly nothing wrong with that, but...
...Eddie is shilling for the National Rifle Association (probably produced to soften its image...that took quite a beating following its unapologetic anti-gun-regulation stand in the aftermath of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.)
I'm sorry, in my left-wing liberal worldview, the NRA is akin to the "Tea Party" wing of the Republican Party...hijacking (what used to be) a reasonable concern and going all looney tunes.
As I have said before, I own guns and would have no aversion to using same to defend myself or my loved ones, but the NRA is just too far "out there" for me. (Oh, the NRA certainly is entitled to its opinion and has the right to express it...First Amendment rights in addition to Second Amendment rights.)
But...
Using the NRA's "Eddie the Eagle" in schools smacks too much of letting the fox into the henhouse. (Plus, according to both Democratic and Republican politicians and the media, schools are already failing at teaching readin', ritin', and 'rithmetic. Let's leave sumthin' for others to screw up. And, hey, do we really want those left-wing teachers and their evil unions getting their hands on gun safety education? Talk about a "concealed weapon" against what the NRA holds near and dear!)
Okay, I've probably ruffled a few feathers, and that's okay.
In fact, been there done that...yesterday, with my Show Me post.
Got a respectful e-mail in response from an avid reader of CAT Tracks...
...with the link below to give me a more balanced view.
Well, I never, ever shy away from presenting the other side of a story (as long as I get to make my catty commentary!)
In the interest of equal time...
